RARE and highly collectible vintage leather currency wallet by famed Italian designer Roberta di Camerino. SUPER CHIC! Before the introduction of the Euro, traveling from country to country in Europe meant carrying different currencies. This leather accessory has four separate zip closure pockets (two on each side). My recollection is that this was purchased at the Roberta di Camerino shop in Venice, likely at the arcade on St. Mark's Square. Black leather.
SIZE: About 7 3/8" x 5 1/8". Each pocket is around 2 1/2" deep.
MARKS: Four classic "R" pulls on the zippers.
CONDITION: Pre-owned. One small damaged spot on the leather (see photo). Otherwise, just expect minor signs of normal aging. It had little to no use, as this was a spare.

postwar objects of desire for the international jet set
, died on Monday in Venice. She was 89.Her death was announced by the Roberta di Camerino fashion house.
Ms. Camerino, who founded her company in Venice in 1945, designed with a neo-Baroque aesthetic in mind. Vibrantly colored and made of lush, tactile fabrics like velvet, her bags were conspicuous antidotes to the sea of black and brown leather in which women’s handbags had long swum. Their shape called to mind an elegant doctor’s satchel; their
brass hardware, which quickly became one of their most identifying features, was fashioned by workers who made the metal fittings on Venetian gondolas.
Among the first handbags to be
widely coveted as status symbols
, Roberta di Camerino bags dangled routinely from the arms of midcentury stars and socialites, including Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor. More recent clients have included Madonna.
Ms. Camerino ran or licensed Roberta di Camerino boutiques in cities worldwide, including, from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, one on Fifth Avenue and 51st Street in Manhattan.
Today the company’s vintage bags are considered extremely collectible
; prices for its current line, available from high-end retailers like Barneys New York, range from just over ,000 for a clutch to nearly ,000 for a full-size bag.
Ms. Camerino later branched out into apparel. Her clothing was known for employing trompe l’oeil effects like printed-on collars, pleats and ruffles.
Giuliana Coen was born in Venice on Dec. 8, 1920, to a prominent Jewish family; as a young woman she dreamed of becoming a theatrical costume designer. During World War II, she escaped with her husband to Switzerland.
The last song she danced to before fleeing Italy, Ms. Camerino said afterward, was “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” featured in the 1935 film “Roberta,” starring Fred Astaire and Irene Dunne. The film’s title, plus her married name, would one day give her the name of her fashion house.
In Switzerland, needing a handbag and lacking money, Ms. Camerino fashioned one herself. Soon afterward, a passing Swiss woman bought it off her shoulder. She later found work making bags in a local leather-goods store. After the war, she returned to Italy and started her own business.
Ms. Camerino’s survivors include a son, Ugo; a daughter, Roberta; and grandchildren. Information on other survivors was not available.
Consciously or unconsciously, other designers widely imitated Ms. Camerino’s handbags over the years. This bothered her — at least at first. “When I was only doing bags, I found it particularly important to be always very well dressed, and so I became a client of Chanel,”. “Once in a fitting she saw me crying because someone had copied a bag which I had done exclusively for Neiman Marcus. ‘You must not cry now,’ Coco said. ‘You cry the day they don’t copy you.’ ”
